Areas 2 & 10 had a Welsh weekend in April. Which was a bit more of a wet Welsh weekend- no hosepipe ban here! The weather was showery with roofs going up and down like a fiddler’s elbow (insert your own more colourful metaphor if you prefer)
We gathered on the Saturday morning at the Llyndir Hall Hotel near Wrexham, where some of the group were staying. Bit damp but be brave and 6 Panthers set off with roofs down. Peter Heighway led us towards the Horseshoe pass. New experience for me- driving through hailstones with the roof down. You know how in rain most of it goes over your head? Well in hail it definitely doesn’t! Its like driving past a firing squad of kids with peashooters. I ended up hunched over the steering wheel hoping the sunvisor would give me some protection… aah the joys of open motoring.
Over a ford, always fun, then Peter stopped under some trees as he could see a rainstorm working its way up the valley toward us. I thought I would macho it out but then decided discretion was the better part of getting soaked and put my roof up as well. On through the showers and stopped at the ‘Ponderosa Café’ at the top of the Horseshoe Pass. Hot mug of tea very welcome!
Peter had mapped out a good route with lots of open countryside. Walked across the Llangollen Canal Aqueduct and had lunch at a café in Lake Vyrnwy. A drive by the lake followed, then Peter had lined up a glass modelling demonstration as a finale. The glass modeller heated glass rods up in a flame, then twisted and bent them to make various shapes and animals. Needless to say, we asked for a Panther, although he did point out that sometimes his cats turn out more like camels! (One hump or two?) Richard and Shirley decided to buy it. Thanks for all who joined in- Richard and Shirley Wos, Phil and Sally Tucker, Andy and Audrey Greig, Geoff and Jane Jones and of course Peter for organising an excellent short tour.
