Winter Recovery weekend
The GEORGE OF STAMFORD, LINCOLNSHIRE.
Click here for details of The GEORGE OF STAMFORD
“Stamford is a unique treasure trove of provincial English architecture built in the finest stone that this country has to offer. Everyone who travelled north passed through Stamford and the coaching trade elevated old medieval inns like the George into major nationally renowned hostelries. Prosperous professional men and merchants were attracted to the town and they built their fine vernacular and later Classical or Georgian houses which today provide the backbone of the town's fabric. It is the consistency and quality of these houses and the exceptional streetscapes they create, which encouraged the BBC to film 'Middlemarch' in the town.
The George is perhaps England’s greatest coaching inn, retaining the charm and atmosphere of its long history and yet offering today’s guests every modern comfort. The history of the George is well worth the read dating back some 900 to maybe 1000 years. In recent years the hotel has been modernised, but great care has been taken not to destroy its interesting historical features. Much of the most recent work of modernisation and decoration has been restoration. Luxurious bedrooms, a cuisine to satisfy the most exacting tastes and a truly warm welcome make The George an ideal stopping point for tourists and businessmen alike. The cellars are a source of great pride, where wine of the finest quality is stored under ideal conditions in vaults, which date back to the earliest days of the foundation.”
Having made a visit to Stamford I was impressed by the historical value of the town, as the above extract touches on. The George too was very impressive with its choice of lounges, bars, formal and informal restaurants one of which would be used for our private dining.
I have reserved 23 rooms for the two night weekend break, the rates of which are £175.00 per person for double occupancy. The hotel does have a number of single rooms again at £175.00 per person. The rate includes two nights accommodation, full English breakfast, early morning tea, a daily newspaper on both mornings, a three course dinner is included on the Saturday night, excluding drinks, which may be freely chosen from the a la carte Restaurant menu in advance. Rate is inclusive of VAT. Dinner on Friday night is not included in the package but can be taken on arrival in the less formal Garden Lounge.
Due to the popularity of the George the rooms are held in our name until 14th December 2007
If you are interested in coming along will you let me know as soon as possible. My telephone and e-mail address is at the front of the magazine. I shall require a deposit of £20.00 per person payable to R A Burn.
Booking is NOT direct with the Hotel.
