Andys Workshop Day 2008

Andy's Workshop Open Day 2008

This year’s workshop day proved to be just as busy and varied as previous ones. I never know what problems are going to come in the door, and with a record number of eleven Panthers on the premises there was bound to be a few.
Some of the ‘Spannermen’ just got on with their bit of general maintenance whilst others needed assistance and technical help. One such job was sorting an oil leak on Terry Price’s 1.6 Kallista, the leak appeared to coming from the front crankshaft oil seal, but when the cam belt cover was removed for a better view it became more mysterious. Oil could be seen coming down from the cam-shaft area, but the seal was dry? Oil was just visible inside the perimeter of the cam-wheel. It was decided to remove the cam wheel/sprocket, on releasing its retaining bolt oil ran out. Engine oil was creeping up the thread of the bolt (the camshaft is hollow), and leaking from under its large flat washer and then flung out under the cam sprocket’s circumference. A couple of drops of ‘Loctite’ on the threads and some RTV silicone effected the cure.

Terry Kerswell set to fettling the polyurethane rear suspension bushes for his 2.9i, he managed to fit most of them, but the Panhard rod bushes will be done sometime later, as the fuel tank will have to be lowered – a bolt fouled against the tank side and couldn’t be withdrawn.
Geoff Booth, with some help, altered his interior mirror stem length. Ref. this little mod. Ray Smith has further improved on it. Ed.
Mike Holloway renewed his Kallista’s discs and pads, not easy as the caliper lock-tabs proved difficult to access. Stuart James used the workshop opportunity to spray Waxoyl on the underside of his 2.8 Kallista and carry out an oil and filter change.

James Willis’s 2.8 Kallista was already in the workshop for some ongoing attention, James unfortunately couldn’t make it. Bryan Daw’s Kallista came in for some hole drilling to fit a high level brake light, his wife Margaret, kindly provided chicken legs and some of the cakes, and Mary, Andy’s wife, sent in some more. The local bakery supplied excellent proper pasties, and after the day was done so were the victuals.
